Nanxiang Xiao Long Bao MIDTOWN

Soup Inside a Dumpling?

“How do you eat a dumpling filled with soup without making a mess?”

That was my first question—one I asked myself more than once, completely baffled by the idea. It sounded like a culinary trap: delicious, yes, but doomed to end in burned lips and stained shirts.

Then came Nanxiang Xiao Long Bao, a gem from Shanghai’s Nanxiang region, opening right on 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. That’s where I finally got it—the magic of Xiao Long Bao (soup dumpling). And after one unfortunate (and very messy) first attempt, I finally managed to eat one without spilling all that precious hidden broth.

The secret? A simple but genius tip from my wife: take a tiny bite from the top of the dumpling to release the steam, then sip the soup slowly before enjoying the rest in one delicious bite. It was a game changer—and from that moment on, I was hooked.

Delicious Items on the Menu

Nanxiang Xiao Long Bao has a wide variety of delicious items on their menu as well—in fact a more-than-decent assortment of high-quality Shanghainese dishes recommended for 9 years running by Michelin Guide.

What We Loved

Most of the ones we've tried my wife and I really loved, but some of my all-time favorites are their Lucky Six Soup Dumplings (six-piece combo of Pork / Crab Meat & Pork / Chicken / Scallop & Pork / Black Truffle & Pork / Gourd Luffa / Shrimp & Pork soup dumplings), their Shanghai Pork Meatballs, and Seafood Noodle Soup. You're going to have to make more than one visit to enjoy most of the amazing items on their menu.

In the video below, my wife and I check out Nanxiang Xiao Long Bao for the first time. That definitely wasn't our last visit.
