Gusteau's GENERAL SANTOS

One Monday evening, the night kicked off with an unforgettable dinner at Gusteau’s, a well-loved seafood spot along San Miguel Street in General Santos. A good friend and her husband generously treated us — along with another close friend — and the meal quickly became the highlight of the evening.

We shared a beautifully prepared sinuglaw (sinugba or grilled pork + kinilaw or fresh tuna, cucumber, and radish salad with vinegar, ginger, and chili dressing) that was fresh, tangy, and just the right kind of spicy. Then came the black pepper crabs, coated in a rich, savory sauce that clung to every shell, followed by perfectly cooked garlic prawns — buttery, aromatic, and gone far too quickly. Each dish was a clear testament to Gusteau’s kitchen: thoughtful, flavorful, and expertly executed.

Though the food easily called for a round of drinks, we held off — we were saving that for later, with plans to head upstairs to a speakeasy-style bar our hosts highly recommended. Known for its unique ambiance and varied cocktail menu, the hidden bar above Gusteau’s sounded like the perfect next stop.

But luck wasn’t on our side that night — the speakeasy happened to be closed. So we pivoted to a different bar elsewhere in town. It was a decent way to end the night, but after the level Gusteau’s set, everything that followed was just background noise.
